About Literate Learners.
Building confidence through evidence-based teaching in Springfield.
At Literate Learners, we believe every person deserves to feel confident, capable, and supported in their learning. Based at our Springfield teaching centre, we provide literacy and numeracy support for children, teens, and adults across Springfield, and surrounding areas.
Our programs are designed and delivered by specialist educators who understand how the brain learns. Using the Science of Reading and structured, evidence-based methods, we help learners strengthen their skills in reading, writing, and maths while building confidence that extends far beyond the classroom.
Literacy tutoring with targeted intervention.
Unlike generic tutoring services, Literate Learners offers targeted, evidence-based teaching in Springfield, with online support available for learners anywhere in Australia. We take time to understand each learner, their goals, and how they learn best.
Our sessions are:
Personalised
Tailored to the learner’s pace, ability, and strengths.
Structured
Grounded in proven literacy and numeracy teaching practices.
Supportive
Designed to build confidence through patience, encouragement, and real progress.
Whether you’re looking for expert guidance to support a learner with ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, or other learning differences, we provide clarity, structure, and care every step of the way.
The Literate Learners Framework.
Our evidence-based methodology.
Our approach is at the intersection of research, structure, and heart. Every session at Literate Learners is grounded in evidence-based teaching practice and informed by how the brain learns.
Our teaching is informed by the Science of Reading (a comprehensive body of research that explains how the brain learns to read) and supported by evidence-based instructional practices. We use explicit, systematic, and cumulative teaching to help learners build and retain essential literacy and numeracy skills.
We use programs such as Sounds-Write and other structured literacy frameworks to strengthen phonemic awareness, decoding, spelling, comprehension, and written expression.
Our lessons are designed to:
- Model new skills through explicit and direct instruction.
- Scaffold learning using guided and independent practice.
- Reinforce progress with feedback, repetition, and review.
- Engage multiple senses (visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic) for deeper retention.
Learning here is never a guessing game. Every lesson is intentional, inclusive, and built on approaches that make progress possible.
The values behind our lessons.
At Literate Learners, our values guide everything we do, from the way we teach to the way we connect with every learner and their family.
Connection
Real progress begins with trust. We build relationships that make learners feel seen, supported, and understood.
Compassion
Every learner’s story is unique. We meet students where they are, with patience and encouragement that helps them move forward at their own pace.
Clarity
We use proven, structured teaching methods so every lesson is purposeful and achievable.
Excellence
Our tutors are literacy specialists dedicated to continual learning and evidence-based practice.
Joy
Learning should feel rewarding. We celebrate curiosity, persistence, and the small wins that lead to lifelong confidence.
Meet Joelene Yabsley, literacy specialist and educator.
Literate Learners was founded by Joelene Yabsley, a literacy specialist in Ipswich and an accredited SPELD QLD and Sounds-Write teacher. With over 15 years of classroom experience, Joelene brings both professional expertise and personal empathy to her work.
Having overcome her own learning challenges as a child, she knows the importance of compassionate, evidence-based support. Her goal is to make high-quality literacy and numeracy support accessible for every learner who needs it.
“When families find us, I want them to feel at home… to know we understand their child, their challenges, and their potential.”
Joelene leads a small, dedicated team of tutors who share her belief that progress starts with connection, and that confidence is the key to lasting success.
Support for every learner at every age.
Learning looks different for everyone, and so does success. At Literate Learners, we support both children and adults with tutoring that builds confidence, clarity, and real-world skills.
For children and teens, that might mean developing early reading skills, improving writing and comprehension, or building confidence with maths.
For adults, it could be returning to study, preparing for career advancement, or simply feeling more capable in everyday life.
Our tutors meet every learner where they are, offering structure without pressure, encouragement without judgment, and progress that feels achievable.
